This site was created to serve as a one stop informational source
for college bound African American / black students. Why, you may ask? Well, there's a myriad of reasons, but let's
just say that I enjoy compiling valuable information that will help the black youth. There's a plethora of information on the web pertaining
to scholarships, and career advice, but it's very decentralized. This
website will allow you to peruse a variety of web sources that provide valuable information on scholarships, internships,
colleges/universities and much more...
I've been in your shoes; therefore I know first hand what you're going through..
Most college bound students are very uncertain about the future. It's difficult to decide on a course
of study or career, when you haven't had the opportunity to explore your multiple interests. Perhaps you've always dreamed
about pursuing a career in medicine/nursing/public health, law, business/management, finance, or teaching etc,
these are truly great aspirations, but are you aware of what it will take to reach your goals? The answer is probably a resounding no.
Despite what you believe, you do not have all of the answers. As you progress through life you will learn that it's full of surprises. Although you can't prepare for all
of life's multiple curveballs, you can begin to think about your future goals [where do you want to be in 5 -10 years] and
devise a concrete method to get there.
As a starting point, it's always a good idea to jot down your career goals. Your statement doesn't have
to be structured or wordy, just create a brief paragraph that addresses: what you'd like to do, and how you'll go about it.
Yes, it's really that simple.
Just remember, you CAN achieve whatever you set out to accomplish. Follow these very simple
steps:
- Believe in yourself
- Pursue your inner passion
- Take the time to do a lot of research on your preliminary career aspirations (i.e. speak to your parents/family,
career counselors, people working in your selected industry, professional organizations, and read books pertaining
to your field of study, career journals, professional magazines and career related websites). Just keep in mind that you should
use these sources only as a guide to aid in your decision making process. Your family and/or career counselor can not determine
which career is most suitable for you, only you can decide this.
- Study Hard (you'll learn that this is one of the best recipes for success)
- Pay attention to your physical and mental well-being (take the time to exercise and de-stress, also be
sure to eat foods high in nutrition).
- Develop a social network (college campuses provide a plethora of social clubs and organizations, the
ball is really in your court to get involved with the right organizations which will help you develop your interpersonal skills
- Try to get plenty of rest (make a commitment to be in bed by 12:30am (if you have classes scheduled
in the early morning hours).
- If one option doesn't open up, always have a backup plan
